Samsung's Diwali gift: Galaxy Note 4 launched in India for Rs. 58,300

Samsung has launched its most expensive device in the country -- Galaxy Note 4 -- at about Rs. 58,300 as it looks to defend its turf in the multi-billion dollar smart devices market in India.

The Korean handset maker had unveiled the Galaxy Note 4 last month in Berlin at the IFA Electronics show. At the launch price, the Note 4 is currently is most expensive device. The previous generation Note 3 (N900) is retailing at about Rs. 38,900 onwards, while its flagship Galaxy 5S is selling for about Rs. 36,000.

"The Galaxy Note 4 is an example of Samsung's commitment to deliver iconic and differentiated products. The Note 4 is innovation with the combination of an enhanced S Pen, large and vivid display and superior productivity features to provide the most refined Galaxy experience to our customers," Samsung India VP (Mobile and IT) Asim Warsi told reporters.

The phablet is hitting the market just ahead of Diwali and will face stiff competition from Apple's new devices -- iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, which will be available from October 17.

The Galaxy Note 4 features a 5.7-inch quad HD Super AMOLED display, 3GB RAM and 32GB internal memory (expandable further). It has a 16MP rear camera and 3.7MP front camera.

The Note 4 comes with an enhanced S Pen to serve as the primary interface for routine tasks. It offers a much more authentic pen-like experience. It also features a fast-charging technology to charge the the battery from zero  per cent to 50 per cent in 30 minutes.

Samsung has been facing strong competition from homegrown players like Micromax and Karbonn. Though it continues to be the leader in the Indian smartphone market, Samsung has seen its share coming down from 35 per cent in January-March 2014 quarter to 29 per cent in April-June quarter, according to research firm IDC.

Micromax, on the other hand, has grown its share from 15 per cent in Q1 to 18 per cent in the following quarter. India is one of the fastest growing smartphone markets globally, with 18.42 million smartphones shipped in Q2 alone.

Samsung has also its Samsung Gear S smartwatch, priced at Rs. 28,900, which features 512 MB RAM and 4 GB internal memory. It has also unveiled the Gear Circle, a neckband to help control calls/music for about Rs. 8,500.

Could These Daily Habits Be Increasing Your Risk Of Heart Disease ?

Cardiovascular disease is a very common condition. There are many seemingly harmless everyday habits that might also be leading to an increased risk of heart disease and stroke. Here are some of the most common daily habits that might be standing in your way of a healthy and happy heart.

You don't take care of your teeth
Poor dental hygiene is a surprising cause of heart diseases. Taking care of your teeth and gums not only leaves you with pearly white teeth, but also keeps your heart healthy. According to research, there is a link between cardiac risks and dental hygiene. This is because when gums are inflamed, bacteria enter the blood vessels, which then travel to the coronary area. This narrows the passages, leading to lesser blood flow.

You tend to bottle up your emotions
If you are feeling depressed, hostile or stressed, it could take a toll on your heart's health. It is not uncommon for all of us to feel these emotions at some point in our lives, but it is how you handle them that makes all the difference. If you tend to bottle up or internalize stress, you may be in grave danger. Laughter and social support have been clinically proven to positively affect for stress and heart health.

You spend hours on the couch in front of your television set
Sometimes you just want to block out the world and become a couch potato, but if this becomes a daily habit, it could start to affect your heart. Sitting for hours at a stretch can increase your risk of heart attack and stroke, even if you exercise on a regular basis. The lack of movement is not compensated by intermittent exercise. This sedentary position affects blood levels of sugars and fats. If you must laze on your couch, at least get up and walk around every now and then.

You have an erratic sleep schedule
You may be at risk of a heart disease if you have an erratic sleep schedule. Sleeping less than five hours or more than nine hours a night may have an adverse affect on your heart health, because both extremes affect your levels of stress hormones and blood pressure.

You snore
Snoring, while annoying for your sleeping partner, may be a sign of a more serious condition - obstructive sleep apnea. This disorder, marked by breathing that is interrupted during sleep, has been known to cause blood pressure to shoot up when you are snoring in your sleep. You should consult your doctor immediately if you sleep regular hours but wake up feeling lethargic and tired.

Your exercise routine isn't consistent
If you feel particularly motivated to exercise on a Monday morning, but then through the week, your motivation seems to dwindle, you are setting yourself up for heart damage. If you work out inconsistently, say by exercising rigorous one day and then taking the next week of because you have overstressed yourself, it could be bad for your heart health. The best thing to do would be to aim for a routine that is slow and steady so that your heart can get accustomed to the physical exertion and be able to adapt accordingly.

You tend to have too many cocktails
While getting belligerent once in a while on an occasion is completely acceptable, if you make it a regular feature, you will put yourself at risk of high blood pressure, heart failure, and high level of blood fats. If you have to drink socially, make sure you have just one drink a day.

You find yourself binge eating very often
One of the main risk factors for heart disease is excess weight. If you add binge eating to the equation, your heart is sure to suffer. Many people tend to overeat when they are stressed, bored or emotional, but it is in your heart's best interest to stick to small portions.

You procrastinate on visiting the doctor for regular checkups
Just because you aren't showing symptoms of heart disease, that doesn't mean you are absolutely safe. Heart conditions have a nasty way of creeping up on you and affect just about anyone. The best way to stay safe is to visit your doctor for regular checkups and keep you weight, diabetes, cholesterol, blood pressure and smoking in check.

You tend to withdraw from the world
On some days, you feel you just want to shut out everyone and everything and go into your shell. That is fine once in a while, but if you make it a habit, it will manifest in some way or the other, most likely in the form of your health. People who have stronger ties with friends, family and society in general tend to live healthier, more fulfilled, longer lives. While it is important to have alone time every so often, reaching out to others and keeping in touch is equally important.

For the first time, Bollywood actor Aamir won't be around for Maharashtra elections and will not be able to put in his vote. This has really made the actor upset as there is nothing he can do about it.
The actor had made his commitment to an event around the same time in the United States of America much earlier.

After the Maharashtra election dates were announced (15th October 2014), Aamir Khan was in a big fix so he tried reshuffling the dates of the event with the organizing team but to no solution.

The event's marketing team had already announced and advertised the event so it was too late for anything to change.

CHECK OUT: Bollywood fears Aamir Khan's PK?
He takes his responsibility as a citizen very seriously. In the past, Aamir had even cut his holiday short to come and vote. The actor has always encouraged the right to vote and has been part of a lot of campaigns to spread awareness about voting.
Aamir is currently gearing up for Rajkumar Hirani's PK which also stars Sanjay Dutt, Anushka Sharma, Boman Irani & Sushant Singh Rajput and is set to release on 19th December, 2014.

Mary Kom punches her way to Asiad gold

Mary Kom punches her way to Asiad gold

Mary Kom celebrates her gold medal in Incheon.Mary Kom celebrates her gold medal in Incheon.

Incheon, Oct 1 (IANS) India's M.C. Mary Kom punched her way to India's first women's boxing gold in Asian Games, defeating Kazakhstan's Zhaina Shekerbekova in the flyweight (48-51kg) final here Wednesday. Mary, a five-time World Champion, defeated Shekerbekova 2-0, with one judge scoring the bout 38-38 in the 17th Asian Games at the Seonhak Gymnasium.
The 31-year-old Indian took some time to be at her attacking best and got just 27 points in the first round.
Backed by a boisterous Indian crowd, Mary Kom, a mother of three and police officer in India's northeastern state of Manipur, banked upon her experience and mixed aggression with caution to counter the speed of her 25-year-old opponent.
Mary Kom, a bronze medallist from the 2012 London Olympics, won the second round 29-28.
The Indian boxer kept her intensity up in the third round as well and while the Kazakh girl looked physically stronger, her jabs and punches lacked accuracy that helped the Indian to take the third round 30-27.
In the fourth round, Mary Kom, multiple-time Asian Championships gold medallist, looked more confident and landed heavy blows on Shekerbekova to gain another 30-27 verdict, which facilitated her historic win.
Overall, the first and the third judge favoured Mary, bronze medallist in 2010 Asiad, with scores of 39-37 while the second judge gave a tie 38-38.
With this win, Mary Kom, who took some time off the ring after the London Olympics due to the birth of her third child, completed her comeback and also gave a fitting reply to Indian officials who had dropped her name from the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in August.
India now have 47 medals (seven gold, eight silver and 32 bronze).

Road Test and Review: Volkswagen Polo GT TSI & GT TDI

Road Test and Review: Volkswagen Polo GT TSI & GT TDI

‘Hot hatch’ is often a loosely used term to describe any good-looking hatchback with impressive performance figures. But in reality, the hot hatches in India can be counted on the fingers of one hand – and the Polo GT is arguably the best among them. Truly a wolf in sheep’s clothing, the Polo GT is already proven to tickle a hardcore enthusiast's fancy. Now that Volkswagen has updated the GT along with the new Polo, let’s find out what’s in store with the new Polo GT.

Design

One needs to work at Volkswagen to spot the design changes to the New Polo. But that’s not a downer because Polo is widely admired for its classic, sober design. Along with the subtle changes to the New Polo, the TSI and TDI get GT badging on front grille and the tailgate. GT TSI gets the badging on the C pillar as well. What add some sportiness to the New Polo GT’s exterior are the black rear spoiler and ORVMs.
Open the door and the GT garnish on the doorstep welcomes you to a cabin that gets a more serious makeover. Contrary to the dual tone dashboard on the regular Polo, the GT gets an all-black, impeccably put together interior. The flat-bottomed steering wheel fits well in the hands and it makes ingress and egress easier. Aluminum pedal cluster adds to the sporting flair and, overall, the cabin feels premium.
Performance

The sweet combination of 1.2 TSI and 7-speed DSG is a formula that Volkswagen doesn’t want to mess with, so the mechanicals of the GT TSI remain unaltered. 174 Nm of torque is a remarkable output for a car of this size; even sweeter is the fact that the peak torque is available from as low as 1500 rpm and all the way to 4100 rpm.  Since the superior performance is achieved with the help of a turbocharger, there’s an inevitable lag but the clever ratios of the DSG gearbox mask it well.
The Polo TSI can sprint from 1-100 kmph in 9.7 seconds and onto a top speed of 190 kmph. The DSG box offers three driving modes – ‘D’, ‘S’ and manual. In the ‘D’ mode, the DSG upshifts earlier and ensures better fuel efficiency while the Sport mode holds on to the gear till the rev limit before shifting. Manual shifting is lever-actuated and I missed paddle shifters big time when looking for some engine braking and a quick burst of power thereafter. But the DSG gearbox anyway shifts quickly and smoothly, and is sure to put a smile on your face.
The Polo GT TDI gets some changes under the bonnet as well. The 1.6 TDI motor has made way for the 1.5 litre unit from the new Polo. However, it has been tuned to deliver an extra 15PS of power and 20Nm of torque, and the result is the same output as the 1.6 TDI – 105 PS of power and 250 Nm of torque. The diesel feels punchier than the petrol variant but will be available only with a five-speed manual transmission. Although there is some turbo lag and the 1.5 feels a bit ho-hum compared to the outgoing 1.6 litre unit, the closely set gear ratios along with slick and precise gearshifts ensure pleasant driving.

Both TSI and TDI engines are superbly refined and they return 17.21kmpl and 19.91kmpl respectively, which is really remarkable considering the fact that both are performance machines.

Ride and Handling

Carmakers generally play it safe while selecting the route for test drives and journalists often end up on long stretches of highways where there is hardly any prospect of testing the car’s handling capability. But in a bold attempt to highlight the handling prowess of the Polo GT, Volkswagen chose the winding narrow roads of Lonavla and as an icing on the cake, they even set up a handling circuit on the Aamby Valley airstrip.

The track had an autocross course, low and high-speed slaloms, 0-100 and hard braking tests. The GTs stuck well under most circumstances but there’s slight understeer due to the added power to the front wheels. However, the extra weight of the TDI engine and ESP on TSI keep things under control. There’s precious little bodyroll and minimal dive under hard braking, and both GTs came out in flying colours in the rigorous track test.
Equipment

The GT range gets an integrated audio system with USB, AUX, Bluetooth connectivity and voice command control. They come with airbags for the driver and passenger as well as anti-lock braking system (ABS) as standard. Being an automatic, the GT TSI also gets Electronic Stability Programme and Hill-hold functions. The GTs are equipped with parking sensors instead of a more convenient reversing camera.

Bottom-line

Both Polo TSI and TDI are priced at 7.99 lakh, ex-showroom New Delhi. The GTs come only in the top trim level, which makes them a very expensive option. The performance of both cars is sensational. Since the Polo GT TSI achieves better performance from a smaller engine, it’s fun to drive while being economical. The GT TDI, on the other hand, comes as a blessing for diesel lovers who craved a real ‘hot hatch.’

Road Test and Review: Mahindra e2o T2

Road Test and Review: Mahindra e2o T2

Frankly, I had rebuffed Mahindra’s offer to test drive the e2o when it was launched in 2013, because I knew I would be staring at the battery range indicator rather than focusing on the drive or the dynamics of the car. I was too skeptical to take the car for a photo-shoot or speed test because the maximum I could peacefully go away from a known charging station was 30-35 kilometres.

When Mahindra called me again recently with the same offer, I happily accepted because the new premium variant of the e2o runs up to 120 kilometres on a single charge. That’s not all, it is now equipped with power steering, which makes city driving a doddle.

Design

The new e2o’s exterior styling remains unaltered and continues to be a mix of futuristic and quirky design. Projector headlamps and honeycomb mesh grille give this tiny car a sporty front but it looks a bit disproportionate in profile, thanks to its tall stance and short wheelbase. The rear gets an all-glass tailgate and a pair of small but nicely tucked in taillights. The body is made of ABS plastic and is attached to the space frame with glue. The panels are infused with colour during the manufacturing process, so they are scratch and dent proof to impacts of up to 15 kmph.
I am still wondering how on earth could such a small two-door car offer so much cabin space. The front seats are comfortable and supportive, and at the tap of a lever they slide forward and tumble, providing easy access to the second row. The second row offers surprisingly ample space for two passengers. Moreover, the large glass windows on both sides create an airy feel. Boot space, however, is just adequate for the grocery-getter duty.

There’s no dearth of equipment in the cabin. The centre console is dominated by a 6.2-inch touch screen infotainment system that displays navigation, DVD player, rear view camera and vehicle settings. The instrument cluster gets a blue backlight monitor to show battery percent, distance-to-empty along with speed and other info.
The e2o gets power windows, electric mirrors, keyless entry and push start button as well. Moreover, you can control some of the functions using a smartphone app. However, the overall quality, fit and finish of the cabin is just average.

Performance, Ride and Handling

The centrally mounted lithium-ion battery powers a DC motor that delivers 25.4bhp and 55Nm of torque. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels through an automatic transmission. Slot the gear lever to ‘F’ and the electric motor’s torque is available right from standstill, brisk enough to keep pace with traffic. When in need of more power to overtake you can shift to ‘Boost’ mode for swifter acceleration. Boost mode is reasonably faster with a 0-60kmph sprint time of 12.8 seconds as against 20.6 seconds in the ‘F’ mode.   Top speed is electronically limited to 80kmph.
The e2o gets MacPherson strut suspension in the front and coil springs in the rear. Since there’s no engine noise, you might clearly hear suspension thuds at times but ride quality is really impressive for a car of this class. This is not the kind of the car to have fun with, so I didn’t bother to check the car’s handling ability. Disc brakes in front offer sufficient stopping power, too.

The e2o’s compact dimensions and now the addition of power steering make congested city roads its playground. In fact, you can meander in and out of traffic with the ease of maneuvering an auto rickshaw.
Running and maintenance cost

Priced at Rs 5.72 lakh (on road, New Delhi) the e2o is not a cheap car to buy but it costs peanuts to run and maintain. Battery comes with a 5-year warranty and Mahindra says it lasts up to 1.25 lakh kilometres with 80% life still remaining. For driving 120km, the e2o consumes 12Kw/hr power and the cost of running is approximately 50 paise per kilometer. Moreover, service is free for the first three years. Even after three years, the customer needs to pay just the labour charge.
Bottom-line

India may not be electric car-friendly yet, but e2o is the first step towards getting there. Mahindra already offers quick charging stations at shopping malls, airports, Mahindra showrooms and many other places. Some state governments are offering subsidy on electric car purchases, too. Using an electric car certainly takes a bit of getting used to, but once accustomed to it the Mahindra e2o makes good sense. After all, this environment-friendly car is incredibly pocket-friendly too.

Road Test and Review: Mercedes-Benz GLA

Road Test and Review: Mercedes-Benz GLA

Is this a Mercedes? I often see this amused expression on the faces of passersby while driving any Mercedes-Benz model in the past two years. The new entrants into the Stuttgart carmaker’s rapidly expanding model range are dynamic, youthful and a clear breakaway from the sedate, “old man’s car” image. I could see such expressions again last week along the Himalayan Expressway as Mercedes-Benz organized the media drive for its latest model – the GLA – to Shimla.

The GLA is not just the latest iteration of the company’s new design philosophy, but an important car that fills a long-vacant void in Mercedes’ lineup - that of luxury compact SUV.

Design

At the first glance, the GLA appears like an inflated A-Class and that’s no surprise because they are built on the same MFA platform. Essentially, the GLA is an A Class on steroids with a straighter roofline and better ground clearance. However, rugged touches like bulging lines on the bonnet, aluminum cladding and large air intakes on the bumper, and especially the taller stance give the GLA an unmistakable SUV look up front. Segment-unique 18-inch alloy wheels and brushed-metal roof rails add more character and style to the profile.  The rear is even more visually modern with A Class-inspired but larger taillights, integrated spoilers and sporty twin exhaust pipes surrounded by large aluminum insert.

The A-Class is undoubtedly the most desirable car in the luxury hatchback segment and it shares a lot with the GLA in terms of styling, which effectively makes the GLA the best looking car in the luxury compact SUV segment.

Interior

A taller seating position is what makes the otherwise familiar cabin fairly distinctive. The infotainment screen taking pride of place atop the centre console, five turbine-style air vents, knobs, stalks and switches scream quality. The instrument cluster is crisp and clear and includes a useful multi-information display for trip, fuel economy and gear indicator. Gear selector stalk is on the steering column and frees up more space for storage and cubbyholes in the centre console. Soft closing lids keep it neat and tidy, too. Absence of automatic climate control is surprising, just like the A and B Class.

Seating comfort in front is top on the line with electric adjustment and three-way memory function that make long drives fatigue-free. However, headroom is not the best in class and tall drivers might get a hemmed-in feel. The panoramic sunroof adds a nice airy feel to the cabin, though. Rear seats are spacious but slightly lacking in underthigh support. There are no rear AC vents and you get a small chit holder in its place. Rear visibility is not great either but reverse camera is part of standard kit and it addresses the issue to an extent.

The 421-litre cargo space is as wide as the M Class but the space saver tyre is simply thrown in there and you will find it tough to arrange your luggage in the boot. The GLA also offers safety features like tyre pressure sensors, attention assist and seven airbags along with ASR, ABS, BAS, ESP etc.

Performance

Moving the GLA along are two engines – a 2.0 litre turbo petrol or a 2.1 litre diesel. The petrol engine makes about 181 bhp and 300Nm of torque between 1200-1400rpm. It’s fast enough to keep an enthusiast happy and Mercedes claims that it will hit 100kmph in 7.6 seconds and on to a top speed of 205kmph. The diesel engine develops 134bhp and 300Nm with a 0-100 time of 9.9-seconds and 205kmph top speed. Although not as sporty as the petrol, it packs enough pulling power to accelerate briskly and be the pick of the bunch for highway driving. With a mileage of 17.9kmpl, the diesel GLA 200CDI will be a more popular choice.

Power is transmitted to the front wheel through a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The generally smooth and clever transmission can be better controlled using the paddle shifters when you need.

Ride and Handling

An added 30mm of ride height compared to the international model (183mm ground clearance) makes the GLA more suited to Indian driving conditions. Longer spring travel and softer tuning ensure a more comfortable ride than the A Class. It helps the car a lot when taken off-road, too. The cabin is well insulated from external noises and that makes it a nice place to be in during long journeys. Probably the only department where the GLA doesn’t match up to the A Class is handling. Yet, with its hatchback underpinnings, the GLA has surprisingly little body roll and it grips well around corners.
Bottom-line

Mercedes Benz will launch the GLA on 30th September only in front-wheel drive variant. An all-wheel drive and AMG editions will follow soon. There will be only one fully loaded trim available and expect it to command a hefty premium. However, class-competitive cabin quality, safety features and the equipment level make it a great buy. After all, the GLA’s captivating looks alone can give competition a run for their money – need I say more?

Mercedes-Benz launches GLA at 32.75 lakh

New Delhi: Mercedes Benz has launched the much awaited luxury compact SUV, the GLA in India. The GLA is available in three trims - 200 CDI Style (Rs. 32.75 lakh), 200 Sport (Rs. 36 lakh) and 200 CDI (Rs.36.9 lakh) ex-showroom Delhi. The company has revealed that the GLA has received an amazing response, with over 600 bookings confirmed in just 18 days. Deliveries begin today.

Mr. Eberhard Kern, Managing Director & CEO, Mercedes-Benz India said: “With the launch of GLA-Class, we are fulfilling the requirements of our new generation customers who wants to drive an emotionally appealing luxury SUV which features typical qualities of a Mercedes-Benz: innovation, efficiency, safety and excellent value retention. The GLA-Class is an important element of our product strategy globally as well in India, and it will join our existing volume drivers. The GLA-Class combines the key design values of Progression and Tradition, and is the SUV of the future and undoubtedly is the next milestone of our growth strategy.”

The GLA will be available in two equipment lines: the Style and Sport. The diesel GLA 200 CDI will be available in Style and Sport lines, and the petrol GLA 200 in Sport only. The Style equipment line gets 18-inch 5-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels as well as the radiator grille with two silver-coloured louvres, Bi-Xenon headlamps and roof rails painted in high gloss black. The interior gets comfort seats upholstered in ARTICO leather black, multifunction steering wheel, mirror package, Carbon structure trim, door sill panels with 'Mercedes-Benz' lettering, Reversing camera, rear center armrest cruise control etc.

The Sport equipment line offers selected exterior and interior features to further underscore the vehicle's sporty character. The radiator grille with two silver-painted louvres and chrome inserts, the 18-inch 5-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels, Aluminium roof rails and the twin-pipe exhaust system with chrome-plated tailpipe trim elements set into the bumper add dynamic highlights from any angle. Further highlights include the load sill guard and beltline trim strip in chrome and underguard in matte silver chrome on front and rear bumpers. Interior details such as contrasting topstitching, ambient lighting, illuminated door sill plates and silver wave-look trim lend a classy look. The Sport variant also features Harman Kardon® Logic 7® surround sound system with 12 speakers including a bass speaker for great audio experience.
