Samsung Galaxy Alpha India Launch Expected at September 27 Event

samsung_galaxy_alpha_gold.jpg

Samsung on Monday started sending invites to an event on Saturday, where the company is likely to introduce the Galaxy Alpha smartphone in India.
The invite describes the event as the unveiling of the "Next Generation Stylephone", tipping the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Alpha with its markedly-different design.
Notably, Samsung, during the global launch of the handset, had called the Galaxy Alpha "the evolution of Galaxy Design", touting "metal frame, elegantly curved corners, and a tactile soft back cover".
While announcing the Galaxy Alpha, Samsung had announced the smartphone would be globally released starting September in over 150 countries.
The Samsung Galaxy Alpha runs the latest Android 4.4.4 KitKat out-of-the-box. It features a 4.7-inch HD (720x1280 pixels) Super AMOLED display. The handset sports a sleek profile with dimensions 132.4x65.5x6.7mm and weighs 115 grams.
The Galaxy Alpha is powered by an octa-core chipset, most probably Samsung's Exynos SoC, with quad-core 1.8GHz and quad-core 1.3GHz. The smartphone also comes in a quad-core variant with a clock speed of 2.5GHz, presumably the Snapdragon 805 SoC the other LTE-A smartphones are carrying.
Considering that Samsung launched the octa-core variant of the Galaxy S5 in India, we can expect the company to announce the octa-core variant of the Galaxy Alpha, and may bring the LTE-A version later.
There is 2GB of RAM and 32GB inbuilt storage, which is non-expandable. The Galaxy Alpha sports a 12-megapixel rear camera and also includes 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera. It packs an 1860mAh battery.
Apart from LTE, other connectivity options include Micro-USB, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPRS/EDGE, 3G, and NFC. The Galaxy Alpha, much like the flagship Galaxy S5, comes with fingerprint scanner.
The Galaxy Alpha was launched with Charcoal Black, Dazzling White, Frosted Gold, Sleek Silver, and Scuba Blue colour variants.
A recent report had suggested that due to excessive pressure from the brick-and-mortar retailers regarding the differences in offline and online pricing of handsets, Samsung has decided to exclusively sell rights for around 48 models to offline retailers.
The report had also claimed that the 48 models also include the premium Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Alpha without revealing all the models.

New Technology to Make Smartphone Batteries Last Longer: Study

New Technology to Make Smartphone Batteries Last Longer: Study
Representational image.
New York:  A new technology to control energy consumption inside transistors could pave the way for a smartphone that does not die after a few hours of heavy use, says a study.

This technology taps into the power of a single electron to control energy consumption inside transistors.

"We devised a technique to cool the electrons internally allowing reduction in operating voltage so that we can create even smaller, more power-efficient devices," said study co-author Kyeongjae Cho, professor at the University of Texas, Dallas.

Each time a device such as a smartphone or a tablet computes, it requires electrical power for operation.

Reducing operating voltage would mean longer shelf lives for these products and others.

The researchers found that when a specific atomic thin film layer was added to a transistor, the layer acted as a filter for the energy that passed through it at room temperature.

The signal that resulted from the device was six to seven times steeper than that of traditional devices. Steep devices use less voltage but still have a strong signal.

"The whole semi-conductor industry is looking for steep devices because they are key to having small, powerful, mobile devices with many functions that operate quickly without spending a lot of battery power," said co-author Jiyoung Kim, a professor at the University of Texas, Dallas in the US.

"Our device is one solution to make this happen," Mr Kim added.

The study appeared online in the journal Nature Communications.

Samsung Galaxy Alpha likely to launch in India later today

samsung-galaxy-alpha
Samsung is hosting an event in New Delhi today, where it is going to launch a smartphone it describes as the “Next Generation Stylephone.” While it hasn’t announced it yet, the South Korean giant is expected to launch the Galaxy Alpha in India later today.
One of the talking points of the smartphone is its design and feel. The company has finally branched out of plastic and has taken a turn with the Galaxy Alpha by giving it a metal frame. In terms of design, Samsung’s smartphone has a unibody design with an aluminum frame wrapped around the device. It is not only better looking than most Samsung smartphones, but also looks deceptively similar to Apple’s iPhone, especially the chamfered edges. It is also one of the few Android smartphones that offers high-end specifications and features in a compact package.
As far as the specifications are concerned, the Galaxy Alpha flaunts a 4.7-inch Super AMOLED HD 720p display with pixel density of 312ppi. The smartphone is powered by an Exynos 5 Octa 5430 processor (1.8GHz quad-core Cortex A51 + 1.3GHz quad-core Cortex A7) paired with 2GB of RAM.
Also featured are 12-megapixel rear camera, 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera, 32GB internal storage and a 1,860mAh battery. On the software front, the smartphone runs on Android 4.4 KitKat wrapped under TouchWiz UI.

White tiger kills youth in Delhi zoo

Eye witnesses say the barricade at the zoo was too low while the curator claims the youth jumped into the tiger's cage.

NEW DELHI: A 20-year-old boy was on Tuesday killed by a white tiger after he jumped into the animal's cage in Delhi Zoo, an official said.
"The youth himself jumped into the tiger's cage. We are trying to ascertain his identity," R.A. Khan, curator, National Zoological Park, Delhi, told IANS.
The tiger mauled the youth, who was later identified as Maqsood, killing him. The tragic incident occurred at around 1.30 pm.
According to TV reports, some eye witnesses present on the spot claim the barricade at the zoo was too low. The boy accidentally fell into the tiger's enclosure as he attempted to get a closer look at the carnivore.
The tiger latched on to the student's neck over the barricade.
Eye-witnesses say there were no security guards around the tiger's enclosure. (With inputs from agencies)

The company has sent out media invites for the launch event in New Delhi on September 29. The invite is titled “See the bigger picture,” which is coincidently the same tagline used in the invites sent to western media.
blackberry-passport-india-launch-invite

Sony Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact likely to launch in India on September 25

sony-xperia-z3
Sony unveiled the Xperia Z3 and the Xperia Z3 Compact at a pre-IFA event in Berlin earlier this month. Now the Japanese company seems to be ready to launch the two smartphones in India.
Sony has sent out media invites for an event in New Delhi on September 25. The invite is titled, “The time to demand great is coming,” and it is most likely the Xperia Z3 and the Xperia Z3 Compact that will be launched at the event.
The Xperia Z3 is Sony’s latest flagship device, and in essence is a subtle evolution over the Xperia Z2. It flaunts a 5.2-inch 1080p display and is powered by a 2.5GHz Snapdragon 801 quad-core smartphone paired with 3GB of RAM. The smartphone also features a 20.7-megapixel rear camera, 2.2-megapixel front-facing camera, 16GB internal storage, and a 3,100mAh battery.
The Xperia Z3 Compact, as the name suggests, is the compact version of the new flagship device. It flaunts a 4.6-inch HD 720p display and is powered by a 2.5GHz Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor paired with 2GB of RAM. Also included are 20.7-megapixel rear camera, 2.2-megapixel front-facing camera, 16GB internal storage, and a 2,600mAh battery.
Sony launched the Xperia Z2 in India back in May, priced at Rs 49,990. The smartphone however is available for as low as Rs 42,000 on a few Indian e-commerce sites.

Suzuki Swift DJE’s Edge Is Efficiency Aka 26.4 km/l

2014 Suzuki Swift DJE Front
The action at the Tokyo Motor Show has commenced with several Japanese automakers bringing up new products and concepts on display. Suzuki recently launched a new version of their popular hatchback the Swift in the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM). The new version is called the ‘Swift JDE’ with changes more prominent than its European sibling. The vehicle has been showcased at the Tokyo Motor Show.
With the new iteration, Suzuki has introduced Dual Jet Engine (DJE) technology on the Swift’s 1.2-litre K-Series petrol engine. THE DJE system couples regenerative braking and an idling start-stop system to offer better fuel efficiency. This has helped the Swift achieve a fuel efficiency of 26.4 km/l for the Japanese driving cycle. The benefits come as the Swift gets several tax exemptions thanks to its higher efficiency. The DJE technology has its roots in F1, and it’s amazing to see such technologies coming to smaller hatchbacks.
Another significant addition to the Swift for JDM is the colour changing speedometer console that Suzuki has offered. The colour of the console changes depending on how you apply the throttle, which is very cool, and till now was something from the supercar league. In a way, this also alerts the driver on his driving methods and will encourage him/her to drive more efficiently. The Swift DJE also gets paddle shifters as standard. In terms of safety, ESP has been given as standard along with ABS. Other changes on the top model include a new bumper, new grille and addition of LED lights.
The Suzuki Swift DJE will be offered in seven variants namely G-DJE, XL-DJE, XG-DJE, XG, XL, Swift RS, XS. The car will be offered with 2WD and 4WD options and will be priced at 12,79,950 Yen (Rs. 7.54 lakhs) for the base model going up to 17,87,100 Yen (Rs. 10.54 lakhs) for the top end model. The DJE technology however will not be coming to India any time soon. The Swift twins are due for an update in 2014, and will receive subtle exterior revisions along with the addition of a start-stop system, keyless entry and LED lights.

2015 MINI Cooper 5-Door Unveiled, A Practical Car For India

2015-Mini-Cooper-S-5-Door-Front
The MINI Cooper is a British icon, known to be funky, retro and available with 3-doors only. However, for the first time in history, the BMW owned car maker has resorted to making a more practical version of the hatchback, by adding two additional doors at the back; and voila! This is the 2015 MINI Cooper 5-Door hatchback for you. Appropriately named the MINI 5 door, the new hatchback will be available across Europe by the end of this year and seems like the ideal car for India.
Based on the third generation MINI 3-door model that was unveiled last year, the MINI 5-door has been extended by 161 mm in length and is taller by 11 mm. The wheelbase has also expanded by 72 mm, improving the interior space over the 3-door Cooper. The external appearance of the car does not change drastically; the front fascia continues with the retro theme, same as the 3-door model, but it is the side profile that shows the real change. The extra doors at the rear seem to fit in, but one can’t help but notice that they are smaller than the front doors.
The interior has been carried over from the 3-door model as well. We were pretty impressed to see the new gen MINI’s cabin to be more practical over its predecessor and the 5-door model only takes it forward. The hatchback is wider, has additional headroom and offers more leg space. The luggage compartment has also grown by 67-litres to a total of 278-litres and you get additional storage capacity courtesy of the 60:40 rear split seats. The car is available with an array of connectivity options, and also gets the retro toggle switches.
In terms of powertrain, the engine and trim range have been carried over from the 3-door model and is available with petrol and diesel engine options. The standard MINI Cooper 5-door is powered by a 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine with MINI TwinPower Turbo Technology that produces 136 HP of power and 220 Nm of torque; while the MINI Cooper S 5-door is powered by a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine that produces 192 HP of power and 280 Nm of torque and has a claimed top speed of 232 km/hr.
There are diesel versions also on offer on the MINI Cooper D 5-door that is powered by a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder motor with TwinPower Turbo Technology that produces 116 HP and 270 Nm of torque. The power packed MINI Cooper SD 5-door on the other hand gets a 4-cylinder diesel engine that produces 170 HP and 360 Nm of torque and has a top speed of 225 km/hr. All engines are mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox, while a 6-speed automatic is available as optional across the range. As for the Indian launch, BMW is most likely to get the 2015 MINI to the country later this year, fully imported as a CBU.

8 Performance Bikes Set For India Launch In Next 6 Months

Performance bikes are going to be at large in the coming six months. There are going to be so many of them that step by step it will be difficult for us to decide what to buy and what not to buy! All of them ranging from Rs. 1.5 to 3 lakh, they are going to create a racket on the roads and tracks of India. Affordable sport biking can be seen on the horizon in our country, finally. Performance motorcycle market leader, Bajaj is leading the charge here with two new models from their side while other companies will launch their products before the year 2015 ends. We are putting a small pictorial trailer for you guys to let you know what awesomeness is on its way, very soon.
KTM RC 390 2014
1) KTM RC 390 – The RC 390 is almost ready for launch and it should come by next month and blow the enthusiasts away with the same engine of the Duke 390 but now, it has “clothes” on it. Enthusiasts are waiting for sharper steering and dedicated ergonomics to improve their track skills and enjoy the massive pulling power. The RC 200 will follow shortly after the launch of the RC 390.
Pulsar SS400 2014
2) Bajaj Pulsar SS200 – The Pulsar SS200 is going to look similar to the Pulsar SS400 but is going to be even more value for money. DRL lights, projector headlights and every other feature is going to be carried forward. The Pulsar SS200 will be the first motorcycle after the Pulsar 220 FI, which is going to carry fuel injection system and SS400 is going to be the next in line. Expect one of a kind character from the engine which is bound to win hearts!
2014 Honda CBR300R
3) Honda CBR300R – The CBR300R is one of the most talked about Honda motorcycles in the country today. Mini Fireblade inspired styling, 286cc pumped up engine which now produces additional 5 BHP of power and 4 Nm of torque while being lighter by 8 kgs, that would give higher cruising speeds. If only Honda gets the price right since day one, Honda fanboys don’t need to look elsewhere.
Yamaha R25 Launch Indonesia
4) Yamaha R25 – If CBR300R is the most talked about motorcycle, the Yamaha R25 has been desired for more than four years. The R25 is showcased in Indonesia and seems very promising. Twin-cylinder screaming engine with a redline of 14,000 RPM is going to please everybody’s senses. Lack of ABS and high pricing may be disappointing for strict budget riders but Yamaha’s fan following with posers and aam junta will do anything to get it.
2014 Mahindra Mojo 8
5) Mahindra Mojo – The Mahindra Mojo has been even more awaited than the Yamaha R25. The Mojo production version was seen at the Auto Expo and it’s ready now. 300cc, DOHC engine producing roughly 28 BHP of power will end up competing with the mighty Honda CBR300R and Hero HX250R. A neck-neck comparison of these motorcycles show how the market tides are turning upside down when it comes to performance motorcycling. A well priced Mojo can steal the show from established manufacturers.
TVS Draken
6) TVS Apache – A TVS 250cc cannot be ruled out anymore. Confirmed by TVS and endless scoops now suggest this is going to turn into reality. A 250CC 30 BHP motor is what is expected. Pricing as always should be killer and expect this to compete with the 30 BHP gang such as the Honda CBR300R, Mahindra Mojo and Hero HX250R.
Hyosung GD250N Road Test
7) Hyosung GD250N – The Hyosung GD250N is a clear cut reply to the KTM Duke 200. Same styling, same equipment and same idea makes it compete with the Mattighofen growler. The Hyosung has more power and torque and the power-to-weight ratio is even higher than the Duke 200. However, when we rode the prototype we were not impressed with it. The Duke 200 is still the most fun to ride entry level motorcycle you can buy. However, you never know what Hyosung does to the prototype, it can come up with anything.
Hero MotoCorp HX250R 08
8) Hero HX250R – The Hero HX250R stunned the world with its 250cc single-cylinder engine creating the most horsepower while having the lightest kerb weight. The HX250R is already the most highly awaited motorcycle. Expect a good pricing from Hero and Hero loyalists will do anything to get their hands on it. ABS and sticky tyres will help put the power done well and safely. Expect the HX250R to come in the market this year and be the fastest quarter-litre machine of its time.

TVS Apache 220/250 Initial Testing Commences

TVS Apache 220/250 Initial Testing Commences

2012 Apache Full Fairing side
TVS Motor Company had introduced the Apache motorcycle in 2007 and it came out to be a huge success for the two-wheeler manufacturer. The Apache is well known for its sporty handling characteristics and strong performance. According to our friends at ICB, TVS is now readying up bigger and sportier versions of the Apache 180. The TVS Apache 220/250 will be the flagship motorcycle for the company and has begun its initial testing at the VRDE (Vehicle Research and Development Establishment) facility in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra.
VRDE is a premier automobile testing and homologation facility in India. Although TVS has started testing the upcoming Apache, it is still expected to be introduced during the 2014-15 fiscal year. The Apache 220/250 is likely to be launched in India in full faired as well as naked versions. It will be positioned above the Apache 180 with a slightly bigger price tag. The Apache 220/250 is expected to be powered by an oil-cooled engine with fuel injection system instead of a liquid-cooled engine. This motor is expected to produce 25 BHP of power and 20 Nm of torque.
For better safety and effective braking, TVS is likely to offer ABS along with twin petal disc brakes as standard on the Apache 220/250. Pricing for the upcoming Apache 220/250 is expected to be under Rs. 1.3 lakhs which will help it to compete with the likes of the Bajaj Pulsar 200 NS, KTM Duke 200 and Honda CBR250R. It is not an easy task for TVS to go head on with much accomplished rivals in the Indian market like Bajaj Auto, KTM and Honda. TVS is also planning to introduce a new 125cc automatic scooter and the all new Victor motorcycle soon.

Mahindra To Launch 3 Motorcycles!

Mahindra To Launch 3 Motorcycles!

After the failure of the first generation 110cc Stallio, Mahindra seemed to have held up their plans for motorcycles. After a long time, Mahindra is now ready for its second innings with the launch of the Duro DZ and Rodeo RZ, revised versions of old school scooters from Kinetic Sym venture. Learning and findings from its first failure have trickled down to Mahindra and now they are ready to launch three new motorcycles. Why are we emphasizing on number 3? Because we know the second generation Stallio is about to launch around Diwali, then we got confirmation that Mojo is undergoing tests and will be launched in 2014. This leaves us to wonder about the third bike, which is totally unknown but confirmed by Mahindra officials. Yes Mahindra senior officials have confirmed that they will be bringing three motorcycles to the Indian market.
Viren Popli (Senior VP, Mahindra 2-wheelers) said that the company has received many queries for the Mojo particularly from the South, thus it will be coming soon. Company is evaluating various options to launch new products across various segments. The specific information was declined by him so we have to wait and watch for the new products from Mahindra.
Initially Mahindra unveiled only two products Stalio and Mojo in a media event with Aamir Khan. So what could be the third motorcycle product from Mahindra? Mr. Popli gave a hint that new products will cover various segments. So we have Stallio as entry level commuter and Mojo as sports offering thus it is quite natural that Mahindra will be bringing a product to bridge the gap between these two, say a 125cc or 150cc bike. As they are going to launch all the three bikes soon, it is difficult to have complete newly designed bike in such a short time. So we may expect that the bike would be coming from Sym stable.
The most probable product which will suite Indian taste is Sym Wolf SB125 Ni (Cevalo). A 125cc, 5-speed carbureted bike with optional Fuel Injection (unlikely in India). Equipped with nice digital instrumentation cluster, 260 mm front disc brake, LED tail lamps and sharp looks. Overall this is an exciting product offering from Mahindra. Further details are not available right now but we will dig into it soon. But it is quite surprising that neither Mojo nor the ‘3rd‘ bike is seen or heard by anyone while undergoing testing anywhere. This puts a question mark on the statement. But as it is confirmed by company officials there should be some fact in it. We bet on the Sym Wolf SB 125 being the third bike Mahindra can offer, what do you say?

Tata Motors To Launch Nexon Compact SUV In 2015

Tata Motors To Launch Nexon Compact SUV In 2015

Tata Nexon India
When the Indian government came up with small car norms which were subjected to lower excise duties, it was Tata Motors which thought of utilising the lower duties by coming up with the Indigo CS, a compact sedan. Tata Motors’ idea led to many following them in the compact segment race while others even exploited the sub 4-metre leverage to come up with compact SUVs. Tata Motors was left behind as the company was slow to come up with new products. The Manza compact sedan has only been unveiled now, called the Zest.
Tata Motors realises it needs an aggressive product push to boost market share. The company has committed itself to launching two new vehicles every year. This year, the automaker will launch the Bolt and the Zest, while next year, the Nexon will be launched around the festive season. This will mark Tata Motors’ foray into the compact SUV segment, a very booming market in India currently. Tata Motors will have to price the Nexon compact SUV aggressively to take on the likes of the Ford EcoSport, Maruti XA Alpha (due for launch in 2015), Hyundai ix25, etc.
The Tata Nexon looks splendid in concept guise but the production model will be very different. While the dimensions will be similar with the car measuring under 4-metres in length, the MegaPixel inspired vehicle won’t have scissor doors, floating seats, and a glass roof. The platform underpinning the Nexon will be the same X1 that is also used on the Vista, Bolt and Zest while power-train options will include 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine and 1.3-litre Quadrajet diesel engine, both motors being turbocharged.
The Tata Nexon won’t get 17-inch wheels like its concept counterpart, it will ride on 16-inch rubber but will boast of a high ground clearance in excess of 200 mm. The vehicle will come with a plethora of features, many of which have made their debut on the recently unveiled Bolt and Zest. Expect Tata Motors to price the Nexon from Rs. 6.5 lakh onwards with the top-end model touching Rs. 10 lakhs.
