Toyota's fuel cell car now has a name

NAGOYA -- The make is Toyota, the fuel hydrogen, and the model ... Mirai.
Toyota Motor has settled on a name for its first commercial fuel cell vehicle, which will go on sale in Japan by next March, according to a person familiar with the matter.
"Mirai" means "future" in Japanese and was chosen from several candidate names. The automaker is expected to formally unveil the new model in November. It is applying for a U.S. trademark on the name.

Toyota will assemble the car at the Motomachi plant, in its hometown near here, at an initial pace of 700 a year. Output could rise, depending on demand. The company's Honsha plant will produce the fuel cells -- which react hydrogen and oxygen to generate an electric current -- and the compressed-hydrogen tanks.
The Mirai is slated to sell for around 7 million yen ($65,000) before taxes in Japan. Toyota plans to release the car in the U.S. and Europe next summer.
